| Fanø is an island in West Denmark, not far north of the better known German island of Sylt. Inga and Reinhard had rented an affordable holiday home for 2 weeks — we are not bound to school holidays yet which makes things considerably cheaper. The setup was uncomplicated enough: Whoever wanted to join the crowd could call them and see whether there would be room. The house could accomodate 8 persons easily and 10 with a bit more cuddling. We could even have pitched a tent in the yard, although it was pretty windy most days. The house had all amenities including a whirlpool, dishwasher and washing machine. | Inga und Reinhard hatten auf Fanø ein Ferienhaus für zwei Wochen gemietet. Wir sind alle noch nicht an die Schulferien gebunden, was solche Dinge wesentlich erschwinglicher macht. Das Setup war unkompliziert genug: Wer kommen wollte, rief die beiden an und schaute, ob Platz sein würde. Das Haus kann 8 Personen beherbergen, mit etwas Gedränge auch 10, auf nur 95 Quadratmetern. Man hätte sogar im Garten ein Zelt aufstellen können, obwohl es immer ziemlich windig war. Das Haus war voll ausgestattet mit Waschmaschine, Geschirrspüler und Whirlpool. |

We were the first ones to arrive. Luckily there is a self service
bike rental close to the harbour. Yes, the bikes just stand there in the front yard —
you choose one and put money in a box, much like at a pay station in a national Park
campground. We took two bikes, mounted the trailer hitch, converted the baby carriage into
a trailer and got going. After retrieving the key and another luggage run
we made ourselves comfortable in the
heated house. Very nice. The second day we slept all day, basically, with the exception of a shopping run to get a basic food supply for the people to come. Michelle had had an exhausting work week.
| Wir kamen als erste an. Glücklicherweise
gibt es nahe am Hafen einen Selbstbedienungs-Fahrradverleih. Genau, die Fahrräder
stehen einfach im Vorgarten und man schmeißt das Geld in einen Briefkasten.
Wir nahmen uns zwei Räder, montierten die Anhängerkupplung, bauten den
Kinderwagen zum Anhäger um und fuhren los. Nachdem wir den Schlüssel
und das restliche Gepäck geholt hatten, machten wir es uns in
dem geheizten Haus bequem. Sehr gut. Am zweiten Tag haben wir eigentlich nur geschlafen, wenn man von einem Großeinkauf für eine Nahrungsmittelgrundausstattung für die erwarteten Freunde absieht. Michelle hatte eine anstrengende Woche hinter sich. |
| Fanø is a pretty island, 3 or 4 kilometers
wide and perhaps 15 km long. Facing the North Sea
in the West there is a steady wind blowing, one of the reasons
why it is the home of an annual kite meeting. The meeting is impressive, as you'll see below. And the beach is impressive. People drive with their cars on it. And with kite buggies. And fly their kites. Ride their bicycles. And still there's plenty of space... When you are done you can take the bus home. Yes, there is a regular bus stop right on the beach. |
Fanø ist eine schöe Insel, 3 oder 4 Kilomter breit und vielleicht 15 lang. Von Westen, der Nordee, her weht ein steter Wind, einer der Gründe, warum sie der Ort ist, an dem sich seit 24 Jahren Drachenenthusiasten zu einem Festival treffen. Das Treffen ist beeindruckend, wie ihr unten sehen könnt. Beeindruckend ist auch der Strand. Die Leute fahren darauf Auto. Und Kite buggies. Und sie lassen Drachen steigen. Fahren Fahrrad. Und es gibt immer noch jede Menge Platz... Wenn man fertig ist, kann man mit dem Bus nach Hause fahren. Genau, es gibt eine reguläre Bushaltestelle direkt auf dem Strand. |
| The three of us made a trip down the beach to the south of the island. We rode our bikes down the beach with the great Chariot trailer, using the tailwind. We explored the Wattenmeer, the tidelands that are so characteristic for the North Sea, and pictureske Sønderho. | Wir drei machten einen Ausflug den Strand entlang zum Süden der Insel. Wir fuhren Fahrrad mit dem Rückenwind am Strand entlang mit dem tollen Chariot-Anhänger. Wir erkundeten das Wattenmeer und das pittoreske Sønderho. |
| An unserem letzten Abend unternahm ich einen Ausflug zur Nordspitze der Insel, eine Sandbank, die auf der Karte an Dungeness Spit in Washington erinnerte. Leider ist die Spitze selbst ziemlich uninteressant, aber unterwegs konnte ich ein paar nette Bilder aufnehmen. |

The pictures are scans from analog 35 mm negative film,
100 and 200 ASA. Unfortunately the scans are not very good.
I tried a new shop which charges more than I like so that I stuck with
a lower (and cheaper) resolution which is not satisfying.
The large versions you get when you click on a thumbnail are
somewhat processed for appearance and sometimes cropped but not
shrunk. Most pictures were taken by Michelle with an Olympus µ II. That model has been around since 1997 and is still available. I like the Olympus a lot because it's small enough to be carried anywhere and has a fixed 35 mm, f/2.8 lens which is better and brighter than any zoom. And pictures are just so much nicer without flash. The other camera is my old Nikon FE with a set of 3 lenses, 24 mm/2.0, 50 mm/1.8 and 135 mm/2.0 (you see I prefer fixed lenses). I bought the FE body as a student second hand in the mid-eighties, for an equivalent of 300 Euros. The sweet thing about it is its ruggedness — it has survived several drops and uncounted bangs — and the compatibility Nikon keeps up, so that I am able to use the superior new wide angle and tele autofocus lenses (but I must focus manually). Those lenses, in turn, will continue to work with a digital Nikon which will come earlier or later. |
Die Bilder sind Scans von 35-mm-Negativen, 21 und 24 DIN. Die Scans sind leider
nicht besonders gut. Ich habe dieses Mal Foto Meyer ausprobiert, die erheblich mehr
berechnen als mein normaler türkischer Sofortentwicklungs-Laden am Herrmannplatz,
und eine niedrigere Auflösung gewählt, weil ich nicht allein fürs Scannen 20 Euro
bezahlen wollte. Das Resultat war aber unbefriedigend, nächstes Mal kommt wieder der
kleine Laden dran, der ja das gleiche Gerät benutzt
(Fuji SP-3000, das EXIF-Tag verrät's). Die großen Bilder sind zwar
aufgehübscht und gelegentlich etwas beschnitten, aber nicht verkleinert. Die meisten Bilder wurden von Michelle mit einer Olympus µ II aufgenommen. Dieses Kameramodell gibt es seit 1997, und es ist immer noch erhältlich. Ich mag die Olympus, weil sie klein genug ist, um sie überall mit hinzunehmen, und wegen ihrer 35-mm-f/2.8-Festbrennweite, die lichtstärker ist und bessere Bilder liefert als jedes Kompakt-Zoom. Fotos ohne Blitz sind einfach so viel besser. Die andere Kamera ist meine alte Nikon FE mit 3 Objektiven, 24 mm/2.8, 50 mm/1.8 und 135 mm/2.0 (man sieht, dass ich Festbrennweiten bevorzuge). Den FE-Body habe ich noch Mitte der 80er Jahre als Student für 650 DM gekauft. Das Tolle an ihr ist die Unverwüstlichkeit — sie hat schon einige Stürze und ungezählte Schläge überlebt — und die Kompatibilität, die Nikon aufrechterhält. Ich kann die hervorragenden neuen Weitwinkel- und Tele-Autofokusobjektive verwenden (auch wenn ich manuell fokussieren muss), und diese werden wiederum an einer digitalen Nikon funktionieren, die eines Tages fällig wird. |
